This Naruto universe if based in the past. It takes place sixteen years before the current canon point of Naruto with one major difference. Kushina and Minato didn't die and Naruto was never conceived. Madara still attacked and attempted to extract the Kyuubi from Kushina, but he failed to do so and was repelled by Minato.
Abilities: Minato’s combat prowess was known not only by the people in his village, but by ninja’s in other villages as well. They were so great that the order was given to enemy ninjas by their commanders that if they were to encounter him on the battlefield to run away. His teacher had even said that Minato was one of the most gifted ninja that ever lived.
His skills with Taijutsu, Ninjutsu. Fuinjutsu and other basic ninja skills were extraordinary. Minato’s speed was one of the major factors in making him such a great ninja. Even without the aid of any sort of jutsu, he was considered to be very fast. His reflexes were so remarkable that he could almost instantly react to an enemy’s attack as soon as it was perceived. His thought process has to be fast as well, as he could not only dodge an enemy attack but also counter attack at the same time.
But as fast as he was, it is when he is using the Flying Thunder God technique is where his immense speed is really able to overwhelm people. The Flying Thunder God technique is a Ninjutsu that is able to teleport Minato to an object that has been marked with his special seal formula. The teleportation is instantaneous, and that technique couple with his already fast movements makes for a deadly combination. It is fast to the point that some opponents are barely able to react to it or even notice that he has used it until it is too late.
Another powerful technique in his arsenal is the Rasengan. It is a powerful technique, even though it is unfinished. Unlike most other ninjutsu, no hand seals are required for it, meaning that it can be quickly formed in the heat of battle by those highly skilled in its use.
His skill with Fuinjutsus are also at such a high level because of being taught by Kushina. The village that she is from specialized in such jutsus, so the techniques were passed onto her, and then she passed them on to Minato.
Possessions: When he steps through the window, he will bring along his clothes, regular kunai and shuriken and his special Hiraishin kunai which is marked with his special formula that allow him to use his Flying Thunder God Technique.
Personality:Minato is a legend in his, despite his relatively short time as Hokage. He was friendly and compassionate to the members of his village, offering advice or talking to them about issues whenever they came to him with them. He even showed some level of respect to enemy ninja on the battlefield. At least when he was able to.
Many consider him to be one of the greatest ninja to come from Konoha, but Minato isn't boisterous enough to claim them himself. But as a child, he stated that he wanted to grow to become Hokage when he grew up and become a great ninja that is respected by the village. And this dream did in fact come true.
Minato's sheer determination and confidence in himself was enough to keep him on the path to attaining his dream, along with Kushina's support(He even said that it was because of her that he became Hokage). If he sets his mind upon doing something, he will follow through with it. No matter what. He's not the sort of person that can just give up and thrown in the towel, even when things may seem as bleak as they can be, he will still push forward.
One of Minato's greatest traits and perhaps something that makes him such a great ninja is his ability to stay calm, which is really a trait that all ninja should have. It's not just outside of battle situations, but even during them. Even when angered or when he is in a time sensitive situation, he can still manage to keep a level head. This really helps to keep him focused and to keep him from making any reckless decisions that could bring harm to him or any of his comrades. This also made him a good leader on missions, the people on his team always knew they could trust him.
Minato is also practically fearless. Even when facing down the Nine-Tails, who was much larger than him, he didn't flinch. Even when it unleashed a powerful attack upon him, he calmly used his abilities to transport the attack to a different location so that he wouldn't do any more damage to the village.
Minato is also a very perceptive and sharp person. He's able to quickly take notice of things that some other people might not or would write off. Such an instance happened in the past when Kushina had been kidnapped. When he noticed the trail of hair left behind by her, he quickly pursued in the direction that it was going. Out of everyone selected for the search team, he was the only one to take notice.
Another such time was when he was battling Uchiha Madara. He quickly picked up on how his ability to make himself seemingly impervious to damage worked. He even formulated a plan in a short time that he used to defeat him. He did this while under pressure from knowing his village was being attacked by the Nine-Tails.
That's another thing. Minato on top of everything else is a very intelligent person. His intelligence was prominent even when he was a child. All of these traits helped him become well known through his village and even others. Enemies on the battlefield would become noticeably terrified when they realized just who they were facing. Through this, he has been able to understand the mechanics of jutsus that he has only seen once. Like he did with Madara. Even when Kakashi first created the Chidori and showed it to him, he could instantly tell what its strengths and weaknesses were.
The village and his friends there are very important to him. He wouldn't want have wanted to become Hokage if they weren't. He would go out of his way to protect any of them if he had to, even if it may have interred with a mission that he might be on. It was also things like that that made him such a great Hokage and leader of the village.
The most important thing to Minato, next to his village is his family. Messing with them in any way is one sure fire way to make him angry. He sees it as his duty to protect anyone that he considers to be his family. And he would give up his life without a moment of hesitation if that meant protecting them. Though he would only do this as a last resort if there was nothing else that he could do. Still, he’d have no regrets about it as long as they were safe.

Prose Sample:It was like the calm before the storm. Minato couldn’t help but feel that way as he sat inside of his office, staring out the window at the vast village before him. His eyes weren’t trained on anything in particular; he was just looking, staring off into space as he thought about Kushina. She would be going into labor soon, and for as excited as he was to be a Father, he was just as nervous.
His normally calm mind was filled with worry at the moment. Worry over different things. Like the seal on Kushina and how during the birth of their child it would become weak. The Kyuubi will try to seize him opportunity to free himself. It would never get a better opportunity, but Minato was going to stop it. Minato and Kushina had been preparing for this since she first found out that she would be having a child.
He had confidence in their abilities to keep the worst from happening. Though he would need Kushina’s strength to help keep the seal intact, it was a lot to ask of her he knew, but he would bear the burden himself if he could. But that wasn’t possible. It was enough to snap him back to reality and he turned his head to look in front of his desk.
A member of the ANBU appeared kneeling before his desk. His head was down and though a mask covered his face, Minato could hear him perfectly.. “Hokage-sama, preparations are complete.”
Minato smiled faintly at the news. “Thank you.” He said in response to the news. “Gather your squad and make sure the area is completely secured.” The ANBU knew how to do their job. Minato knew that they’d already swept the area that he picked a dozen times, but it didn’t hurt to do it at least once more. He was happy with the choice that he made. It was far enough from the village that they wouldn’t be disturbed and yet close enough that they wouldn’t have to wait too long for help to arrive if they needed it.
“I will let the mid-wife and Kushina know.” The ANBU member gave him a nod before disappearing just as quickly as he appeared. After he let Kushina and the mid-wife know the news, everything would be in order. But it seemed as if his wife may have been able to sense the good news, because before he even stood up from his chair, she was walking through the door of his office.
Minato’s face lit up when he saw her. “Kushina.” He brightened up as soon as he saw those strands of red hair. He knew exactly who it was when he saw them, there was no one else here with hair the resembled hers. As she came to him, he wrapped his arms around her and gave her a little hug.
“I came by to drop off your lunch.” She said as she gazed up to him. She was holding his lunch wrapped in a yellow cloth in her offhand.
Minato just merely shook his head. It wasn’t necessary for her to do that. Especially with how quickly he got around. “That wasn’t necessary, Kushina. You should be at home resting up.” But he knew her. Trying to get her to do something that she didn’t want to do was impossible. She was truly stubborn.
“I was on my way to see you anyway. I’ve just gotten word that the special location has been prepared.” He could see a mix of emotions on her face as he told her, happiness, relief and fear. He knew where most of the fear stemmed from, though. It was the fear of the pain associated with childbirth. The thought of her in pain made Minato feel uneasy as well, but he hid it. He knew two frightened would be parents wouldn’t do anyone any good.
“Kushina.” Minato reached over to her and grabbed her hand. He hoped that the gesture as well as his words would be comforting. “I’ll be there with you the entire time. I’m not going to leave your side.” With those words, Kushina’s own face brightened and her mood lifted..
Minato turned and lead her to the chair behind his desk. “Come. We can share my lunch and finally decide what color to paint the our son’s room.”

Why this form: Owl's are swift and stealthy hunters, they are also very perceptive and are able to pinpoint their prey with great accuracy with just their hearing alone, not that they couldn't locate them with their impressive vision if they were within their eye line.
It is these traits that made me think of Minato when I was examining which animal would seem to fit him best.
